5 Top Tips for Job Seekers

By RL Stevens

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

Get started on your job search with the best basic tools:
1. Networking Business Cards: These are must-haves when meeting new people. Everyone is a connection and the easiest way to give them you information is to have it on a card. Besides your basic contact info, it should have your title, industry and area of expertise. Use good card stock and keep it simple. If you are in a creative field, you can get away with having it be more artsy.
1. Networking Business Cards: Use good quality card stock in a white, ivory, grey or other classy shade that matches your resume paper. State your name, title, industry and area of expertise. Indicate your contact number and your e-mail. Note: If you are in a creative field it's ok to be a little more artsy in card color and graphics. The card is an essential tool for exchanging your basic information with new a contact and it eliminates searching for a pen and a piece of paper.
2. LinkedIn Profile: This is the #1 professional online network going and millions of people around the world are members. They have their professional profiles listed, where they work, where they used to work, what schools they attended, what professional and educational groups they belong to and recommendations from former co-workers, clients and associates. You can learn a lot from a well-crafted profile including new contacts, companies to research and organizations that have members with the same interests and goals as you.
3. Your "Pitch": You know how to answer when someone asks you what you do when you are employed. You work for this company in this role doing these tasks. When you are unemployed, what do you say? "I'm looking for a new job." Well, you could. It's best to use the opportunity to your advantage. Create a 30-second to 1-minute story. State your experience and expertise, what you are looking for and what you can do for a prospective employer. "For 10 years I was the VP of Operations for ABC Company. My focus was on ___, ___ and ___. I am now interested in working for a ___company in the ___field, such as XYZ Co or DEF Co. My expertise in ___ will be applicable to their ___ division or product. (Throw in a success statistic.)" You get the picture. No sob story, no throwing the previous boss or company under the bus. Be positive, enthusiastic and open to suggestions. And if the person you are with is new to you, please ask them about what they do. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship!
4. Success Stories: Everyone has accomplishments from their work. Everyone. If you think about it, you can remember or uncover achievements that will help promote you as a good candidate. If you are having trouble, pretend you are going to have your annual review and you will get a salary increase for every measurable accomplishment you present to your manager. You'd find them. These examples show your ability to solve problems and address challenges an employer may have. Show them how you identified the circumstance, what conduct you chose to address the concerns and what the conclusion was. This simple strategy can be very impressive and says a lot about you, the way you work and what value you bring to the company.
5. Planned Activities: "Looking for a job is a FT job" as the saying goes." Work usually incorporates various activities: computer work, meetings, phone calls, paperwork, research, projects, client interactions, follow-ups, reports. It also may include prospecting for new clients, vendors or opportunities, selling a product or service and closing deals. All of these elements are present in your job search. You need to research companies of interest, prospect for contacts, create informational meetings, uncover opportunities, speak with company representatives, present your materials, sell your abilities, follow up and close the deal. To help keep you motivated, you must plan your time so you have goals, just like when you were working at a company. Having said that, when you were working you took a day off now and then and sometimes could rearrange your schedule to accommodate life. You should still do that in a job search. You can take time out during the day to do something of importance to you and make that time up in the evening. Give yourself a day off periodically. It's healthy and smart to be good to yourself. One final activity - once a week, try on your interview clothes to make sure they still fit! You'll be glad you did!

For Women, Science Careers Offer Intellectual Freedom and Flexibility

By Linda Lowen

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

I once spent a day shadowing a research scientist and came away with the sense that she saw her work as fun. She taught me that researchers are passionate about their careers. Yet most young girls see science as boring, or work that's too hard to pursue, or devoid of any relevance to their lives. How do you help them to continue the innate love of science and discovery that's in all of us?
When you see the best science being done, it has elements of exploration, fun, and personal involvement; it's about enjoying the challenge. You also satisfy the question of how nature works. It's extremely interesting and endlessly captivating. Scientists often complain that we spend a great deal of time securing grants and funding to do our research, but we've all chosen to do this. There's a degree of autonomy in a research setting, and we forget to convey that it's an extremely rewarding aspect.
Science in academic settings or research institutes is different from trying to solve a problem with a particular end in mind. In a corporate setting, the focus is on problem solving or grappling with questions. The science which isn't goal oriented is very impressive because you have such freedom of choice - Choice in what we do is a huge determinant as to whether or not we enjoy this.
That's something we don't convey to girls - that science can offer intellectual freedom, which is a wonderful thing - and to have access to this type of career is extraordinary.
Why is science seen as boring? Perhaps it's because the teaching of it happens in a very fact-based way. To teach well you have to not only teach the concepts but teach that science is a process of thinking. When science is taught in a problem-solving way, then boys and girls don't get turned off.
Kids pick up completely on what their teachers are thinking. Teachers are so incredibly important and we undervalue them. We must change that, and politically advocate for teachers. I recognize that teachers have a tough life; they're overburdened, and we need to re-examine how we compensate teachers. We should make it one of the top paying jobs and then people would flock to it.
When I was a child, I had a chemistry teacher who came into my school relatively young. She enjoyed what she did and made chemistry so much fun. Because we enjoyed her teaching us, she thrived in her work. It matters to teachers that they feel valued and liked. It's important to understand that how people learn is realistically influenced by the interaction of teachers and students.
In the biological sciences you've observed that women are getting advanced degrees and doing postdoctoral research at the same rates as men, but not getting the top jobs. What are these top jobs, and why are women still excluded from them?
The most desirable positions are in academic institutions where there's a cutting edge research component and lively inquiry. When we look at the pools of applicants, women are very poorly represented. Students say that it looks too hard and too daunting. There's underrepresentation and women are concerned about family issues and there's no real support for this. The good news is that we're aware of what's happening, and intuitions are trying to correct the issues that are turning away really talented women scientists in this career. It's not that women can't do this work; something is putting them off, and it's a combination of things not unique to the sciences.
There are sometimes cumulative negative cues - subtle signals that women receive - that are not huge by themselves but add up to a discouraging picture of the profession that they want to go into. They see it as hostile to family life - that they will be taken as not serious about their profession. We all recognize this and work hard not to create a negative environment.

Business Success Story - Take-A-Boo Emporium

By Susan Ward

Job Vacancy Indonesia, Employee, Vacancy

While many people think that finding antiques is the hardest part of Andrea and Martin's business, it isn't. Finding inventory is easy, as Andrea and Martin buy from a network of other antique dealers, do estate sales, and do consignment.
The hardest part of starting Take-A-Boo was finding customers. Like many small businesses, Take-A-Boo Emporium had no advertising budget when it opened (and still doesn't). Andrea and Martin have both spent many hours promoting the business. Rising to the challenge of business promotion means exploring a variety of promotion ideas and constantly searching for new business promotion opportunities.
Andrea regularly sends out press releases to home decor magazines, newspaper editors, and television producers. These efforts have paid off with mentions in local community newspapers.
For instance, a June window display that included wedding photos of local residents was featured in a local newspaper. "It was a nice way to tie in the community and generate awareness at the same time," Andrea says.
Take-A-Boo Emporium's second anniversary street party in June was another promotion idea that was a big hit with local customers and helped raise the business' profile in the community. The party included bubble blowing for the kids and free caricatures for customers.
The company's promotion efforts on local television have also been very successful, bringing customers to the store and building credibility. Martin has appeared as an antiques expert on Toronto Living and appears regularly on the Rogers Community Television program Daytime. When he appeared on Breakfast Television on Citytv, two customers who called in to the shop while Martin was on the air bought items from Take-A-Boo Emporium. Now there's great customer response!
Andrea has also often discussed story ideas with the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and a variety of home magazines. While nothing national has panned out yet, Andrea is hopeful. "Making the contact is the first part. Generating publicity takes time. The seed planted today will blossom next spring into a story."
Another way that Andrea and Martin seek to reach out to prospective customers is by using the Internet. Continue on to the next page to learn how they used eBay to test the market for their products and developed a web site.

Termination - Terminated from Employment

By Alison Doyle

Definition: Termination is when an employee's job ends. Termination can be a voluntary termination of employment by the employee. Voluntary termination includes resignation or retirement.
Involuntary Termination
Employment can also be involuntary - when an employee is terminated by the employer. Employees can be terminated for cause. In that case, an employee is fired or dismissed from their job. Employees can also be laid-off when there is no work available for them. Employees who are laid-off may be eligible for unemployment benefits.
Employment at Will
In some cases, employers don't need a reason to terminate employment. Employment at will means that an employee can be terminated at any time without any reason. It also means that an employee can quit without reason. Employers are not required to provide notice when terminating an at-will employee.
Also Known As: termination from employment, terminated
